Most of these supplements specifically target women's insecurities about their breasts, particularly after giving birth, losing weight, and having their breast implants removed. A large number of women today prefer to delve into alternative means, especially those that do not require surgical methods.

Many are enticed to try out these supplements, although most do not realize that there may be little or no evidence about the safety of the breast enhancement pills sold. Consumers are advised to verify the claims of a selected supplement with the Food And Drug Administration, to ascertain the potency and safety of each product.

Are Most Breast Enlargement Pills Safe?

According to a report in a journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast enhancement pills may not work and could have serious side effects, especially when combined with other medications. At least 20 to 30 different herbal breast enhancement supplements are promoted on the Internet, TV, and in magazines, however that doesn't mean they work effectively, according to a report on safety and effectiveness that recently appeared in the society's journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

"Breast-enhancing herbal products have become a lucrative industry in recent years due to their 'guaranteed' safety and low cost compared with surgery," writes the researchers. However, these guarantees are not based on any long-term, randomized clinical trials," the report adds.

Because breast enhancement pills are sold as supplements, they are not subject to in-depth checks by the FDA. Many of the commercially-available pills' herbal ingredients have only anecdotes and short-term, limited studies to support their enhancement claims, notes the report.

The herbs may also have side effects, especially when taken with other medications, warns researchers. For instance, the report points says black cohosh may negatively interact with anticancer drugs such as tamoxifen, and that chaste-tree berry may interfere with the potency of birth control pills, therby making them both less effective.

Another herb, fenugreek, might meddle with diabetes drugs and medications that are designed to curb clotting, says researchers. They also warn that the active ingredients of the herb dong quai may be linked to cancer. Other herbs used in breast enhancement pills include saw palmetto, kava, fennel seeds, damiana, dandelion, wild yam, and blessed thistle.

"As with any herbal supplements, side effects and drug interactions remain to be established," adds the study. "Individuals who choose to use these supplements need to be aware that herbal medications are not without possible adverse side effects, especially if they are taken in conjunction with other medications."

Do Breast Enlargement Supplements Work?

Natural breast enlargement pills however, according to health experts and analysts, could theoretically work to enhance breast size, since some of them contain herbal ingredients that are known to contain and possess estrogen-like effects on the body. The use of birth control pills is generally thought to temporarily increase breast size in the same manner as estrogen causes fluid retention in the breasts, and may have a positive, natural effect on breast tissue.
